Moving can be overwhelming at any time of the year, especially during the holiday season. If you are moving during the holidays, we know how hectic it can be. We know a thing or two about buying, and selling homes, and the entire moving process and we’d like to pass some of our tips on to you. Below we have provided a moving checklist to help you stay organized so that you can still enjoy your family and friends during the Christmas season.

HOLIDAY MOVING CHECKLIST:

  • Budget early: Create two additional budgets this month. One for moving and one for Christmas shopping, this way you’re not caught by surprise by finances during the moving process.
  • Combine a moving announcement and holiday card in one: When sending out holiday cards, why not stick a note inside letting the recipient know that you’ve moved? Not only are you tackling two tasks at once, but you are also giving them time to send a card back using your new address.
  • Change your address: Forward your mail before you move. Holiday shipping can delay mail so you want to make sure you change your address at least a week before you move by going online at  USPS.com/move or visiting a local post office and asking for a Moving Packet with a Change Address form.
  • Locate and label all holiday decor before moving: Separate boxes with your Christmas decor from the other moving boxes so that they are easy to find when it’s time to unpack.
  • Utilize any unused vacation time for moving days: You may have some vacation days you need to use before the end of the year, be sure to use them on moving days. Free up your work schedule so that you have the whole day to supervise and move.
  • Collect free boxes for moving and gifts:  No need to purchase moving boxes if you don’t have to! You can use free boxes for moving and gift wrapping. Ask local grocery stores, large retailers, friends, neighbors, and recycling drop-off points if you can pick up their used cardboard boxes.
  • Declutter: Make your move easier by paring down your possessions. Now is the perfect time to sell, trash, or donate unwanted items.
  • Coordinate a moving team:  You will want to coordinate this early on since most people’s calendars are full during the season. Whether you are hiring movers or getting family and friends together to help with the move, coordinate a team to help you on moving day.
  • Transfer utilities:  Make sure utilities are transferred by moving day. Keep in mind that transferring utilities could take a few days so you want to have it set up before the move.
  • Moving Truck: One perk about moving during a busy holiday is that it’s a slow season for movers which means companies usually offer discounts and there are plenty of moving trucks available. Search for companies with these holiday benefits-they are out here.

Tip:  Don’t forget to reserve a moving truck with a loading ramp and a dolly.
