House hunting is fun, but sometimes the search can be overwhelming. Before you begin your hunt for the perfect home, start by creating your wishlist. Your wishlist will serve as a helpful guideline while you are shopping. First, consider all of your requirements and categorize them into three parts: needs, wants, and wishes. Refer to your wishlist during your home search to help you determine what type of home will best fit your lifestyle and budget. While certain features like a fireplace and a pool may be desirable, you’ll also want to include these essential factors listed below to that wishlist.

Where do you want to live?

With your budget in mind, consider affordable areas and neighborhoods that you would like to search for a home. Think about the potential home’s proximity to your daily commute and activities like work, schools, shopping, and entertainment. Do you want to live in a highrise overlooking a bustling city? Or is a smaller picturesque town more of your style? If you have children, school districts also may be a crucial deciding factor in determining where you want to live.

Should you buy or rent?

There are many pros and cons to buying or renting. If you are not sure which option suits you best, think about your long-term plans. Will you need to be flexible to pack up and move as soon as you need to? Or, perhaps you want to be rooted into a community, then buying may be the better option for you. What type of home are you looking for?

Consider the type of home you are looking for, such as a single-family home, condo, or apartment. What’s the estimated square footage you are interested in? How many bedrooms and baths? Is a two-story home ok? Or is a flat, one-level a must?

Do you have time for yard work?

Do you enjoy or have time to work outside and maintain a yard? Maybe you want to skip the hassle of yard work and get a smaller lawn or even a patio space. Do you have pets? A fenced-in, dog-friendly backyard could make it under the Want column of that wishlist.
